Why Do People Bully

Yesterday, we talked about what true bullying is. We learned that it's not just about being mean or saying hurtful things. For any bad behavior to be considered bullying, it must be intentional & repetitive.

Let's get into why people bully. Of course, we are not psychiatrists or behavior analysts, so we cannot specify the exact reason why a person would act this way. There could be many reasons, but most of the time, it's because they themselves are hurting inside.

They probably aren’t as happy or confident as they appear to be on the outside, otherwise they wouldn’t find it necessary to bully others. There could also be negative things happening in their home that they have to live with on a daily basis. Not knowing how to handle that situation could make someone need to displace it on another person, therefore they bully to try and feel in control.

Instead of hating them, or trying to get back at them, try to have compassion for them. This is really hard, but it is an important step in helping to solve the problem.

Bullying might give you a temporary feeling of power or control, but it doesn’t make you happy. It can make it more difficult for you to feel good about yourself and it can interfere with making real friends.

How do you think someone who bullies really feels about themselves?
